Down wins inaugural Henry Handel Richardson Writing Competition

Melbourne writer Jennifer Down has won the inaugural Henry Handel Richardson Writing Competition for her short story ‘Pressure Okay’. 

The competition, judged by Helen Garner and sponsored by Text Publishing, was established by the Henry Handel Richardson Society to ‘celebrate Richardson and her work’.

Down receives $1500 in prize money and $400 worthy of books from Text. Second and third prize winners also receive cash prizes and books from Text. 

Down’s story was chosen from a shortlist of 12 stories selected from over 400 entries. To see the full shortlist, click here.  

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Down was shortlisted for the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript. The manuscript has since been acquired by Text.
