Swedish bookstore chain expands to the UK

Swedish bookstore chain Pocket Shop has opened its first UK store in Birmingham airport, reports the Bookseller. Run by a group of UK booksellers, with assistance from a team of ‘Swedish bookselling superstars’, marketing project manager Karin Porshage said customer reactions have been ‘very positive’, with many expressing their liking for the ‘friendly customer service’ and ‘purple store design’. CEO Anna Borné Minberger attributed the bookstores expansion to Britain’s recovery ‘from the digital revolution’ and the corresponding desire of UK retailers to ‘present something new’ to the public. Pocket Shop–owned by media giant Bonnier–has 26 bookstores located across Sweden, Finland, Germany and now the UK. The chain plans to open two more stores in Britain by the end of the year.
