Costa Book Awards 2016 shortlists announced

In the UK, the shortlists for the 2016 Costa Book Awards have been announced. The four titles shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award are: This Must be the Place (Maggie O’Farrell, Headline), The Gustav Sonata (Rose Tremain, Chatto & Windus), Days Without End (Sebastian Barry, Faber) and The Essex Serpent (Sarah Perry, Serpent’s Tail). Shortlists were also announced in the categories of First Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book. Overall, women make up 16 of the 20 authors shortlisted. The winners will be announced on 3 January 2017. Each category winner will receive £5000 (A$8419), and the overall Costa Book of the Year winner will receive £30,000 (A$50,505). As previously reported by Books+Publishing, the 2015 Costa Book of the Year was awarded to The Lie Tree (Frances Hardinge, Macmillan Children’s Books), the first children’s book to win the overall prize in more than a decade.
