Us and Them: On the Importance of Animals, Anna Krien’s March 2012 Quarterly Essay (Black Inc.) has won the inaugural 2012 Voiceless Media Prize for print.

The award was announced on 28 November, together with the winners of the broadcast award, 7.30 reporter Sarah Dingle and producer Lesley Robinson, for their report ‘Hunting rights hide horror for dugongs, turtles’, which resulted in amendments requiring Native Title hunting rights to be subject to animal cruelty laws in Queensland, as in other Australian states.

Each award is worth $5000. Runners up in each category were: in print, District Bulletin reporter Maria Taylor for ‘New evidence of flawed science, wishful counting as kangas die for petfood’; and in broadcast, 7.30 reporter Bronwyn Herbert and producer Lesley Robinson for ‘Disturbing footage prompts calls for duck farming changes’. Both runner-up prizes were worth $2500.

Also announced on the night were the winners of the inaugural $15,000 Voiceless Writing Prize.
