Australian authors longlisted for Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award

A number of Australian authors have made the longlist for the 2013 Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, one of the world’s largest prizes for short story collections.

The longlisted titles by Australian authors are:

  • The Swarm (Andy Kissane, Puncher & Wattman)
  • An Unknown Sky and Other Stories (Susan Midalia, UWA Publishing)
  • The Rest is Weight (Jennifer Mills, UQP)
  • Tarcutta Wake (Josephine Rowe, UQP).

The four Australians are among more than 70 writers who have been longlisted for this year’s award, which is worth €25,000 (A$31,311). A shortlist will be announced in May, followed by the winner announcement in July.

The Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award was first presented in 2005. The award, which is presented for a collection of short stories published in English anywhere in the world, commemorates Irish writer Frank O’Connor and is designed to promote the short story form. Previous winners include Haruki Murakami (2006), Edna O’Brien (2011) and Nathan Englander (2012).
