O’Neill shortlisted in Scottish book awards

Australian author Ryan O’Neill’s The Weight of a Human Heart (Black Inc.) has been shortlisted in the Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Book Awards.

O’Neill’s novel was shortlisted in the First Book category alongside five other titles: So It Is (Liam Murray Bell, Myriad Editions), The Panopticon (Jenni Fagan, William Heinemann), Tony Hogan Bought Me an Ice-Cream Float Before He Stole My Ma (Kerry Hudson, Chatto & Windus), Ramshackle (Elizabeth Reeder, Freight Books) and Snake Ropes (Jess Richards, Sceptre). Other categories in the awards are Fiction, Nonfiction and Poetry.

Judges will announce the finalists in each category on 5 September, with each of the finalists to receive £5000 (A$8700). An overall winner will be chosen following a public vote, which will be announced on 2 November at the Lennoxlove Book Festival in Haddington, Scotland. The overall winner will receive £30,000 (A$52,000).

The Weight of a Human Heart was previously shortlisted in the 2013 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and the 2012 Queensland Literary Awards.
