‘Burial Rites’ shortlisted for ‘Guardian’ First Book Award

Australian author Hannah Kent has been shortlisted for this year’s Guardian First Book Award in the UK for her novel Burial Rites (Picador).

Kent’s novel is one of five titles on the shortlist for the £10,000 (A$17,210) award, which is open to fiction and nonfiction and is presented for ‘excellence, promise and originality’. The other shortlisted titles are: We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo (Chatto & Windus); Sex and the Citadel by Shereen El Feki (Vintage); Kiss Me First by Lottie Moggach (Piacdor); and The Spinning Heart by Donal Ryan (Doubleday).

Chair of the judging panel and editor of the Guardian Review Lisa Allardice highlighted the ‘pleasingly global line-up’ on this year’s shortlist, which she told the Guardian she hopes ‘will introduce many more readers to these vibrant, original new talents’.

The Guardian First Book Award, which is presented in association with UK bookseller Waterstones, is now in its 15th year. The winner of the award will be announced at the Tate Modern in London on 28 November.
