McFarlane shortlisted for ‘LA Times’ debut fiction award

Australian author Fiona McFarlane has been shortlisted for the LA Times Book Awards in the US for her debut novel The Night Guest (Hamish Hamilton).

McFarlane’s book, which is published in the US by Faber, is one of five finalists for the Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. The other finalists are: We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo (Chatto & Windus); Mira Corpora by Jeff Jackson (Two Dollar Radio); I Want to Show You More by Jamie Quatro (Grove Press); and The Peripatetic Coffin and Other Stories by Ethan Rutherford (Ecco). The winner of the category will receive a cash prize of US$500 (A$555).

The LA Times Book Awards have been presented annually since 1980 for literary excellence. Awards are presented in 10 writing categories and individuals are recognised with the Robert Kirsch Award for lifetime achievement and the Innovator’s Award for ‘cutting edge work to bring books, publishing and storytelling into the future’. Novelist Susan Straight is the winner of this year’s Robert Kirsch Award and YA author John Green is the recipient of this year’s Innovator’s Award for his ‘dynamic use of online media to entertain and engage’.
