Tan shortlisted for 2015 Kate Greenaway medal

Shaun Tan’s Rules of Summer (Lothian) is one of eight titles shortlisted for this year’s Kate Greenaway Medal for distinguished illustration in children’s books.

The shortlists for the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Carnegie Medal, which is presented to the writer of an outstanding children’s book, were announced on 17 March. The winners announcement will follow on 22 June.

The organisers said themes of ‘war, sickness and adversity’ ran through both shortlists. ‘There’s no doubt our writers and illustrators do not shy away from difficult, often painful imagery and themes,’ said judge chair Agnès Guyon. ‘There is darkness here, illuminated by the bright light of optimism. These incredibly strong shortlists are not just a showcase of talent, but of the skilful ways our greatest writers and illustrators introduce young readers to big ideas, always instilling hope as they set their characters against the harshest challenges.’
