Wheeler Centre receives $300,000 for new podcasting centre

The Victorian government has allocated $300,000 to the Wheeler Centre in its 2017-18 state budget for a new podcasting centre.

The Wheeler Centre will use the funds for the ‘creation, publication and distribution of original audio content, stories and quality broadcasts’, with the new centre to ‘diversify the Wheeler Centre’s offering, extend its reach and respond to the growing audience preference for on-demand digital narratives’.

The funding is part of $106.6m in new funding for creative industries in the state budget, down from $152m in new funding allocated in 2016-17.

A significant portion of the new funding is going towards infrastructure and support for existing programs, including $40m for maintenance and upgrades at the Arts Centre Melbourne; $5m towards the redevelopment of the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI); $28.7m for the National Gallery of Victoria’s Summer Program; and $10.7m to support the Melbourne International Film Festival and other film festivals.

Creative Victoria will also contribute $5m over four years to the State Library of Victoria’s ‘Vision 2020’ development, with the money going towards enhancement works to all entrances and surrounding streetscapes.
