{"id":1556,"date":"2018-08-31T13:47:42","date_gmt":"2018-08-31T02:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/?p=1556"},"modified":"2018-08-31T13:47:42","modified_gmt":"2018-08-31T02:47:42","slug":"amazon-to-merge-createspace-and-kdp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/articles\/2018\/08\/31\/1556\/amazon-to-merge-createspace-and-kdp\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon to merge CreateSpace and KDP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon has announced that its print-on-demand platforms CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) will merge,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-digital-reader.com\/2018\/08\/27\/amazon-is-merging-createspace-into-kdp-print\/\">reports the\u00a0<em>Digital Reader<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement follows staff layoffs at CreateSpace in March and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/articles\/2018\/01\/24\/689\/amazon-createspace-to-close-author-services-division-58-jobs-cut\">closure<\/a> of the company\u2019s author services division in July this year.<\/p>\n<p>Authors are being asked to move their books from CreateSpace to KDP, and Amazon has launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kdp.amazon.com\/en_US\/help\/topic\/GSJULX3WGP36HQ3R\">help page<\/a> on the KDP website to explain how the merger will affect authors.<\/p>\n<p>The page states that while the \u2018overall\u2019 self-publishing process on CreateSpace and KDP is the same, there are some differences that will affect authors, including costlier printing on some \u2018low-page count\u2019 books, changes to the author royalty payment schedule (from 30 to 60 days after the end of month on KDP), and a new cover creator (covers created with CreateSpace will still be printed but authors will not be able to edit them). For more information about the differences between CreateSpace and KDP, click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kdp.amazon.com\/en_US\/help\/topic\/GSJULX3WGP36HQ3R#differences\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Authors will now also need to order proof copies of their book via the Amazon shopping cart, but the site <a href=\"https:\/\/kdp.amazon.com\/en_US\/help\/topic\/G202132360\">notes<\/a>: \u2018KDP doesn&#8217;t currently support paperback distribution to Amazon.com.au, Amazon.com.br, or Amazon.nl. Australian users can place orders from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>New GST laws affecting online retailers saw the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2018\/06\/01\/108733\/amazon-to-block-oz-shoppers-from-amazon-us\/\">block Australian purchases<\/a> from Amazon\u2019s international websites in July this year, so it is unclear at this stage if proof copies will be available to independent publishers who utilise KDP.<\/p>\n<p>Initially a DVD and CD production service, CreateSpace was acquired by Amazon in 2005 and later took on print-on-demand services.
