{"id":1746,"date":"2018-10-30T11:48:41","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T00:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/?p=1746"},"modified":"2018-10-30T11:48:41","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T00:48:41","slug":"over-one-million-books-self-published-in-the-us-in-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/articles\/2018\/10\/30\/1746\/over-one-million-books-self-published-in-the-us-in-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Over one million books self-published in the US in 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the US, more than one million books were self-published in 2017, breaking the record for the the total number of titles self-published in a year, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/media.bowker.com\/documents\/bowker-selfpublishing-report2017.pdf\">report published by Bowker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Self-publishing in the US grew by 28% between 2016-2017, with a total of\u00a01,009,188 self-published titles in 2017, up from\u00a0786,935 in 2016 with 8% growth from 2015-2016.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, self-published print books were up by 38% for 2017, driven by a 50% increase in ISBNs requested for books published using self-publishing platform CreateSpace.<\/p>\n<p>Bowker data shows that self-published ebooks decreased by 13%, continuing a downward trend for the third consecutive year. However,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/publisher-news\/article\/78291-the-number-of-self-published-titles-cracked-1-million-in-2017.html?utm_source=Publishers+Weekly&amp;utm_campaign=4b27661a83-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_10_11_03_07&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_0bb2959cbb-4b27661a83-306345761\"><em>Publishers Weekly<\/em><\/a>\u00a0noted that because Bowker\u2019s ebook data is based on ISBNs issued using its Identifier Services, the drop is likely due to more authors moving to Amazon\u2019s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) self-publishing platform, which issues its own Amazon ASIP identifiers.
