{"id":1872,"date":"2018-11-29T12:36:40","date_gmt":"2018-11-29T01:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/?p=1872"},"modified":"2018-11-29T12:36:40","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T01:36:40","slug":"amazon-unblocks-oz-shoppers-from-us-store","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/articles\/2018\/11\/29\/1872\/amazon-unblocks-oz-shoppers-from-us-store\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon unblocks Oz shoppers from US store"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australian consumers are now able to purchase and ship items from Amazon\u2019s international website, according to a statement from Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>The retailer\u00a0<span lang=\"en-AU\">suspended<\/span> shipping to Australian addresses from its international website on 1 July 2018 in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2018\/06\/01\/108733\/amazon-to-block-oz-shoppers-from-amazon-us\/\">move to comply with GST laws affecting online retailers<\/a>.\u00a0Amazon had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2018\/06\/20\/109866\/amazon-launches-prime-in-australia\/\">established a \u2018global store\u2019 option<\/a> on its Australian site offering a selection of four million products from the international store, which has increased to 20 million. After making the change to allow delivery to Australia directly from Amazon.com, customers have access to around 500 million products.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon says it has listened to customer feedback after announcing the changes. \u2018Since that time, our teams have continued to focus their efforts on building the complex infrastructure needed to enable exports of low-value goods to Australia and remain compliant with GST laws,\u2019 said an Amazon spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We will continue to work constructively with the government on the implementation and enforcement of its legislation to ensure it achieves its objective of a level playing field for all retailers and marketplaces,\u2019 the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Booksellers Association (ABA) chief executive Joel Becker told <em>Books+Publishing<\/em> that it was impressed that after about six months, Amazon has come up with a solution to add GST to sales.\u00a0The ABA has long lobbied for the\u00a0change to Australia\u2019s model for collecting GST on low-value overseas purchases.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We congratulate the Commonwealth government and the Australian Taxation Office for sticking to their principles.
