For more information and to see the full program, visit the EWF website <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emergingwritersfestival.org.au\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Booktopia CEO steps down as earnings, share price tumbles<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booktopia co-founder Tony Nash will step down as CEO of the Australian online book retailer after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2022\/05\/05\/213803\/nash-to-step-down-as-booktopia-ceo-as-company-earnings-down-63\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company posted a 65% drop in profit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the nine months to 31 March.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest earnings report comes after an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2022\/02\/28\/210639\/booktopia-profits-halved-after-covid-lockdowns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interim report in February<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed the company\u2019s profits had halved on the back of slowing revenue growth during the first half of the financial year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement, Booktopia said its third quarter earnings fell by 65% to $1.5 million \u2018due to the combined impact of increased operating expenses and lower academic book sales\u2019. The retailer also reported it expects its net profit after tax (NPAT) for the year to be a loss and warned its full-year results \u2018may also be impacted by a penalty from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2022\/01\/11\/208226\/accc-lodges-case-against-booktopia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ongoing proceedings by the ACCC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booktopia\u2019s share price closed at $0.39 per share on 16 May after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2020\/12\/04\/160542\/booktopia-completes-asx-listing-closes-at-17-above-issue-price\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listing on the ASX in December 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at $2.86 per share. The company has begun the search for a new CEO and Nash will remain in the position until a replacement is appointed.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Booklife Prize for Nonfiction finalists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookLife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publishers Weekly <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have announced the four finalists for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booklife <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prize for Nonfiction, worth $5000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookLife<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Prize is an annual writing competition in two contests (fiction and nonfiction) sponsored by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BookLife<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publishers Weekly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The mentees will have the opportunity to develop their skills in crafting and pitching ideas, conducting research, interviewing subjects, fact-checking and editing, and will attend a series of masterclasses taught by longform practitioners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open to early to mid-career writers, the program will run from October 2022 to April 2023.
