Tickets are available as one-, two- or three-day passes to the conference. For more details, see the SPN <a href=\"https:\/\/smallpressnetwork.com.au\/event\/independent-publishing-conference-2022\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amazon to require AI disclosure under new guidelines; limits on new title numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amazon has updated its Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) guidelines to require users to acknowledge AI-generated content.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kdp.amazon.com\/en_US\/help\/topic\/G200672390#aicontent\">new guidelines<\/a>\u00a0distinguish between AI-generated content and AI-assisted content, which does not need to be disclosed. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kdpcommunity.com\/s\/article\/Addition-of-AI-Questions-to-KDP-Publishing-Process?language=en_US&amp;forum=KDP%20Forum\">post<\/a>\u00a0announcing the new guidelines, Amazon said it is \u2018actively monitoring the rapid evolution of generative AI and the impact it is having on reading, writing and publishing\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Beginning today [6 September], when you publish a new title or make edits to and re-publish an existing title through KDP, you will be asked whether your content is AI-generated,\u2019 Amazon wrote. \u2018As always, whether publishers make use of AI technologies or not, all books in our store must adhere to our KDP Content Guidelines, including the requirement that you accurately inform us when content is AI-generated.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Amazon defines AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool. The guidance states: \u2018If you used an AI-based tool to create the actual content (whether text, images, or translations), it is considered \u201cAI-generated\u201d, even if you applied substantial edits afterwards.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/05\/05\/ai-spam-websites-books-chatgpt\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that books entirely generated by AI were flooding Amazon\u2019s marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>The new guidelines on acknowledging AI-generated content came before an announcement later in September that Amazon was \u2018lowering the volume limits we have in place on new title creations\u2019 on its KPD platform. In an update posted in the KDP Community Forum on 18 September, the company said it is lowering the number of new titles users can update to the platform daily to three, \u2018in order to help protect against abuse\u2019, adding that it expects very few publishers to be impacted by the change, \u2018and those who are will be notified and have the option to seek an exception.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crime writing award winners<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The winners of Australia&#8217;s two most prominent awards for crime writing\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2023\/09\/04\/237077\/ned-kelly-awards-2023-winners-announced\/\">Ned Kelly<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2023\/09\/04\/237060\/davitt-awards-2023-winners-announced\/\">Davitt awards<\/a>\u2014were announced last month.
