{"id":650,"date":"2018-01-24T14:12:52","date_gmt":"2018-01-24T03:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/?p=650"},"modified":"2018-01-24T14:12:52","modified_gmt":"2018-01-24T03:12:52","slug":"full-program-announced-for-2018-perth-writers-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/independentpublishing\/articles\/2018\/01\/24\/650\/full-program-announced-for-2018-perth-writers-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Full program announced for 2018 Perth Writers Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The full program has been announced for the 2018 Perth Festival Writers Week, which runs from 19-25 February.<\/p>\n<p>Events at the festival include the pairing of &#8216;literary giants&#8217; Kim Scott and Helen Garner in a discussion on &#8216;why literature matters&#8217;; a preview of Tim Winton&#8217;s forthcoming novel\u00a0<em>The Shepherd&#8217;s Hut<\/em>\u00a0(Hamish Hamilton); dining events, such as breakfast with Miles Franklin-winners Josephine Wilson, Michelle de Kretser and Sofie Laguna and lunch with UK writer Alan Hollinghurst; and writer and photographer William Yang&#8217;s closing address on his career working with words and images.<\/p>\n<p>Architecture receives a special focus in this year&#8217;s program, including guided heritage walks and a retrospective of documentaries by filmmakers Ila B\u00eaka and Louise Lemoine.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2016\/11\/03\/80614\/first-authors-announced-for-perth-writers-festival-2017\/\">previously reported by\u00a0<em>Books+Publishing<\/em><\/a>, international guests attending the festival include UK authors Hollinghurst and A C Grayling, Canadian writer Louise Penny and US writer Cory Doctorow. They are joined by local authors Robert Drewe, Maggie Beer, Tex Perkins, Tim Rogers, Rachael Johns and Claire G Coleman and more than 100 other writers and artists.<\/p>\n<p>Children&#8217;s events include mural activities with Indian small press Tara Books; family activities in the &#8216;Paper Bird Kombi&#8217;, run by Fremantle children&#8217;s bookshop Paper Bird; and the &#8216;Curated by Kids&#8217; program, a series of sessions staged with the involvement of 10 guest curators aged 10-12.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 program is curated by\u00a0<em>West Australian\u00a0<\/em>literary editor William Yeoman, who was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.perthfestival.com.au\/william-yeoman-to-curate-2018-perth-writers-festival\">appointed guest curator<\/a> following the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.booksandpublishing.com.au\/articles\/2017\/08\/01\/93967\/dorrington-steps-down-as-pwf-program-manager\/\">departure of long-time\u00a0program manager Katherine Dorrington<\/a>\u00a0in 2017. The event has been extended from four days to a full week, and will be based in a new hub located at the University Club of Western Australia, as well as extending to libraries and bars in Perth.
