As a midwife, Lainey’s mum Emma is determined to be there for those who need her. But when seventeen-year-old Lainey finds herself in trouble, this dangerous new world becomes very real. On first reading The Hush, I got that tingly feeling we’re always looking for that tells you this is something really special. First and foremost, it is an utterly gripping, page-turning thriller following a mother and daughter as they face an impossible dilemma. But underpinning the twists and turns are bigger questions that Sara is asking about women’s rights over their bodies, our responsibilities towards a greater good, and whether the ends can ever justify the means.

The Hush is timely and thought-provoking, and the characters at its centre are crafted with immense compassion, insight, sensitivity and heart. This is a celebration of the connections between women across generations and the power that can be found there. It’s one for fans of tense, compelling thrillers, but also for anyone who loved Children of Men, Station Eleven, The Power or The Handmaid’s Tale. The Hush is a must-read for women – and men – everywhere.
