Great Book Swap!

The 2022 Great Book Swap was officially launched at the International Grammar School in Sydney, on 15 March by Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) ambassador and astrophysicist, Kirsten Banks and ILF CEO, Ben Bowen.

Money raised from the Great Book Swap nationally is used by the ILF to publish books in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander First Languages and to put culturally relevant books as well as books written by Community, for Community, into the hands of kids in remote Australia, where books are few.

Workplaces, book clubs, schools, individuals, and organisations can host a Great Book Swap any day throughout the year. The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for a gold coin (or fiver) donation.

This year, the Foundation aims to raise $150,000 to gift 15,000 culturally relevant books to children and families in remote Communities.

How to host a Great Book Swap

It is easy and fun!  Invite your book club, team, students or social group to bring in their favourite book and swap it for another for a donation.

Here’s how:

  1. Register online – The Great Book Swap | Indigenous Literacy Foundation
  2. Promote your event (we show you how)
  3. Gather your books and prepare for your event
  4. Swap and donate
  5. Submit your funds and share your experience!

Visit to learn more. There are some great ideas and easy to use tools that help you to raise money and awareness, thank donors and reach fundraising milestones.

Organisations large and small can host a Great Book Swap. It is a fabulous way to engage staff in sharing and connecting around books and their interests and raise funds for a great cause.

About the ILF

In remote Communities across Australia, there is often no infrastructure such as libraries or bookstores. Access to reading material can be extremely limited and this can impact the achievements of Indigenous children.

The ILF is a charity of the Australian Book Industry. It invests in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities by providing the tools and resources that Communities request to help them to shape their children’s literacy futures.

As a Community-led organization, the ILF responds to remote Communities’ requests for culturally relevant books, art and writing workshops, learning resources, mentors, and literacy programs.

The Foundations three programs are:

  1. Book Buzz aims to develop familiarity and engagement with books for children under five.
  2. Book Supply gifts new, culturally relevant books to remote Communities across Australia and
  3. Community Publishing Projects support Communities to write and illustrate their own stories in languages of their choice.

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation receives no government assistance and is funded solely by corporate sponsors, Foundations and Trusts, organisations and individual donors. This allows the organisation to be agile, build trusted and long-term relationships with Communities and plan for long-term impact.
