'The Rook' named best science fiction novel at The 2012 Aurealis Awards x

HarperCollins Publishers is delighted to congratulate author Daniel O’Malley, whose debut novel, The Rook, was named best science fiction novel at this year’s Aurealis Awards.

Publisher, Anna Valdinger said, “the nominees in all categories were really strong, and it was a massive thrill when The Rook was announced as the winner of best science fiction novel.”

The Rook, an outrageously good, genre-bending novel, about a secret organisation keeping England – and the world – safe from supernatural threats (one staff meeting at a time), was “the judges’ clear and unanimous winner,” said category judge Alex Adsett.

Following the win, O’Malley said he was “delighted and honoured to have been selected, especially when the other nominees were so outstanding. Australian writers are producing such terrific works in science fiction and fantasy – it is a very exciting time both to be a writer and a reader.”

North vs South publishers golf x

The captain of the Southern golf team, Patrick Gallagher, is proud to announce the defeat of Greg Bain’s Northern team and the return of the Border Crossers’ jug to its rightful home in the Allen & Unwin offices.

A hard fought series of matches at beautiful Bonville on the NSW north coast resulted in a comfortable win for the Southern team, with long driving Graham Jowett awarded the Rough End of the Pineapple trophy as the singles winner over the series. Equally long driving but direction-challenged Graham Clifford took out the Big Dog Award.

It is hoped to hold a NSW golf day later this year. All interested please contact patrickg@allenandunwin.com. Contrary to common belief you don’t have to be either male or geriatric.
