HarperCollins acquires debut novel by Australian writer Sandra Leigh Price x

HarperCollins Australia is thrilled to announce the acquisition of the debut novel by Australian writer Sandra Leigh Price, A Tabernacle for the Birds, in a two-book deal for ANZ rights with the Blake Friedmann Literary Agency.

It is 1929 when three people find themselves washed up on the steps of Miss Du Maurier’s bohemian boarding house in Sydney. Ari is a young Jewish man, a pogrom orphan who lives under the stern rule of his rabbi uncle, while dreaming his father is Houdini. Upon his hand he bears the forbidden mark – a tattoo – and has a secret ambition to be a magician. He finds an injured parrot and is unsure of how to care for it, until he meets Lily, a girl after his own abracadabra heart.  But the wild card in the pack is Billy, who harbours secrets desires of his own…

Catherine Milne, Publisher of Fourth Estate, says ‘I am thrilled to be publishing this book. This is a stunningly original novel which has will appeal to all readers of The Night Circus – imagine if you will Oscar and Lucinda, but told through a dark Tim Burton-esque lens. This is genuinely exciting writing.’

A Tabernacle for the Birds will be published by Fourth Estate in April 2015.

  • Hachette Australia
  • Hachette New Zealand
  • Pan Macmillan Australia & New Zealand
  • Quercus Group

This is an important announcement regarding the transfer of Quercus titles to Hachette Australia (HA), and Hachette New Zealand (HNZ).

Following the acquisition of Quercus by Hachette, HA and HNZ will be taking on the sales, marketing and distribution of the Quercus list, with effect from 4th August 2014. The arrangements concerning the transfer are as follows:

  • Returns of all Quercus titles invoiced by ADS prior to 1st August 2014 (i.e. on behalf of PM) will be authorised under the prevailing ADS/PM returns terms until 6th October and such authorised returns will be credited provided they are received at ADS in mint/resalable condition no later than 31st October. After this date, ADS cannot accept returns of books invoiced prior to 1st August 2014.

  • The Hachette teams in Australia and New Zealand will sell-in new titles from September publications onwards, and new titles invoiced from the September cycle onwards will be supplied at existing Hachette trading terms.

The Quercus Group UK would like to take this opportunity to thank the Pan Macmillan team for their commitment to the Quercus list. Jane Harris, Quercus Sales and Marketing Director, commented: "Whilst we look forward to moving our sales and distribution for Australia and New Zealand to our new parent company Hachette, I would like to thank Pan Macmillan Australia wholeheartedly for their hard work and professionalism over the last three years and for the significant contribution they have made to building our authors and creating bestsellers in that time.”
