HarperCollins is thrilled to announce it has acquired the world rights to a wonderful new Australian writer, Eliza Henry-Jones, via Calidris Literary Agency.
Her debut novel, In the Quiet, to be published in July 2015 is a heart-breaking, tender and life-affirming novel about grief, loss and families, which gradually unravels the life and secrets of Cate Carlton, who has recently died yet is able to linger on, watching her three young children and her husband as they come to terms with their life without her on their rural horse property.
HarperCollins Publisher Catherine Milne said: “I am over the moon to be launching what is bound to be a brilliant career.”
Eliza says: “I could not be more thrilled by the opportunity to work with HarperCollins to make In the Quiet as wonderful as it can be. HarperCollins has published some of my favourite writers and I am humbled (and still in a little bit of shock) to now be amongst them.”
Although she is only twenty-four, Eliza Henry-Jones has been writing a novel a year since she was fourteen. She has just completed a Masters of Social Work and postgraduate qualifications in grief, loss and trauma counselling and works at a drug rehabilitation centre in Melbourne, using horses in therapy sessions.

UQP would like to congratulate Kristina Olsson (Boy, Lost) and Yvette Walker (Letters to the End of Love) for their respective wins in the Non-fiction and Emerging Writer categories in the WA Premier’s Literary Awards last night. Boy, Lost’s success in this award adds to its previous wins in the Queensland and NSW state awards and the Kibble Award, as well as shortlistings in the Victorian Premier’s and Stella awards. No other Australian book has achieved this in the past year. Yvette Walker is a bookseller based in Perth, so especially significant for her to win in her home state.

21 Sep was International Day of Bibliodiversity. To coincide with this Spinifex Press has published ‘Bibliodiversity: A Manifesto for Independent Publishing‘ by Susan Hawthorne. Susan has travelled to Cape Town for the meeting of the International Alliance of Independent Publishers and the Open Book Festival where she spoke about her work.
