Congratulations to Kwame Alexander, who has won the 2015 Newbery Medal, the highest honour for children’s literature in the US.
Alexander’s powerful novel-in-verse The Crossover (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, HB, $24.99) paints an authentic portrait of twelve-year-old narrator Josh Bell who uses the rhythms of poetry to emulate the ‘moving & grooving/popping and rocking’ of life on the basketball court with his twin brother, J.B.
Alexander, who has written 18 books, told the Washington Post that he ‘tried to write the book to show boys—and girls—that poetry could be cool’.
