Black Inc. mourns the passing of John Hirst.
John Hirst was a wonderful man and a superb historian. He was truly public-spirited in his life and work.
Over many years of working with him, we found him to be deeply generous.
He was a mentor to young historians—a teacher, advocate and adviser. He placed great store on writing for a general readership.
His book The Shortest History of Europe achieved international success. Just recently, its sales in China alone passed 100,000 copies.
But his major achievement was in changing our view of many aspects of Australian history, including the early days of British settlement, the advent of democracy and the forging of federation.
He had a sociological imagination of great originality, and the historian’s gift of synthesizing vast amounts of material and seeing new patterns and meanings.
His work will surely endure, for its originality, scholarship and deep intelligence.
We have been honoured to publish it.

The Australian University Heads of English and the estate of Vivian Robert de Vaux Voss are pleased to call for nominations to the second annual Voss Literary Prize.
