Miles Franklin shortlist, Booksellers’ Choice award winners x

Last week the shortlist for the 2021 Miles Franklin Literary Award was announced, while the Australian Booksellers Association announced the winners of its Booksellers’ Choice awards, with The Little Bookroom’s Michael Earp and Where the Wild Things Are’s Genevieve Kruyssen taking home bookseller and young bookseller of the year respectively.

The shortlists for the Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards were also announced, as was the winner of the 2021 Penguin Literary Prize, which went to James McKenzie Watson for the manuscript of his novel Denizen. Meanwhile, literary organisations including Express Media, Sydney Review of Books and Suburban Review were among the recent recipients of Australia Council funding.

In other awards news, the shortlist for the prestigious ALS Gold Medal was revealed, Nakkiah Lui and Philip Bunting were awarded the biennial Russell Prize for Humour Writing in their respective categories, and the shortlists for the 2021 Environment Award for Children’s Literature were announced. Booktopia was also shortlisted in two categories for the Online Retail Industry Awards.

In the UK, Hilary Mantel took out the £25,000 Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction for The Mirror & the Light (Fourth Estate), beating out several Australian authors for the prize, while the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway medals for children’s literature were awarded to Jason Reynolds and Sydney Smith respectively.
