Local authors recognised overseas, new Perth indie bookshop

Two local authors have been recognised in overseas awards: Michael Robotham won the CWA Steel Dagger for best thriller for his novel When She Was Good, while Laura Jean Mckay’s The Animals in That Country was shortlisted for the Arthur C Clarke Award for science fiction.

In other awards news, also announced were the ACT Book of the Year shortlist and Griffith Review’s emerging voices competition longlist, as well as the INSPIRE Writer in Residence initiative recipients. Meanwhile, Perth’s Centre for Stories announced the creation of the Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli Fellowship.

A new indie bookshop is to open in the Perth suburb of Mosman Park, while in personnel moves, Booktopia is restructuring its marketing team and Caroline Overington was appointed literary editor at the Australian.

Overseas, A Kind of Spark won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, while Sri Lankan writer Kanya D’Almeida won the overall Commonwealth Short Story Prize.
