Parliamentary inquiry into the arts, US DoJ seeks to block PRH, S&S deal

A parliamentary inquiry has made a slate of recommendations to support Australia’s cultural and creative industries, including a review of PLR/ELR schemes, minimum thresholds of local content and increased funding to the ABS.

The New England Writers Centre is crowdfunding a guide to publishing children’s books. In awards, the winners of the inaugural Speculate Prize, Speech Pathology Book of the Year, Helen Anne Bell Poetry Bequest and Victorian Community History Awards winners have been announced, as has the shortlist for the Deborah Cass prize and IBBY Australia’s 2022 Honour List.

Overseas, the US Department of Justice is suing to block PRH parent company Bertelsmann’s proposed acquisition of Simon & Sschuster (S&S). Both Bertelsmann and S&S have committed to fighting the lawsuit. In the UK, the winners of the Polari Prizes and the British Academy Book Prize have been announced.

Applications are now open for the 2022 Residential Editorial Program, which will be held from 21-24 February in Manly, Sydney. The program includes two scholarships for First Nations editors.
