Booksellers’ Choice shortlists, Wheeler Centre 2022 Hot Desk fellows x

In awards news, the Australian Booksellers Association announced the shortlists for the 2022 Booksellers’ Choice Book of the Year Awards; local writers Sarah Walker, Eleanor Kirk and Shelley Burne-Field are among the finalists for the 2022 Commonwealth Short Story Prize in the Pacific category; and Australian authors Jacqueline Bublitz and Peter Papathanasiou have been longlisted for the UK Crime Writers’ Association 2022 Dagger Awards.

The Wheeler Centre announced the 21 recipients of the 2022 Hot Desk fellowships, returning after a ‘Covid-induced hiatus’ in 2021. Meanwhile, Australian Poetry named Audrey Molloy’s The Important Things (Gallery Press) as the winner of the 2021 Anne Elder Award.

In the UK, the shortlist for the Wolfson History Prize was announced, as well as the shortlist for the 2022 Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize.

ABDA shortlists, FALS inaugural residency recipients, Waterstones profits down x

This week, the Australian Book Designers Association announced the shortlists for the 70th Australian Book Design Awards; the Foundation for Australian Literary Studies announced the recipients of its inaugural Writing at the Reef Residency; and the 2021 shortlists for the Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize and Judith Wright Poetry Prize were also revealed.

In the UK, Waterstones reported its after-tax profit fell 85% as sales declined 39% in 2021; independent booksellers are concerned about cost of living rises leading to fewer customers and lower average spending; and the shortlists for the Jhalak Prize and the Jhalak Children’s & Young Adult Prize for Black, Asian and minority ethnic writers were announced.
