‘H is for Hawk’ named Costa Book of the Year

In the UK, Helen Macdonald’s H is For Hawk (Vintage) has won the £30,000 (A$57,460) Costa Book of the Year award after previously winning the Biography category. The judges described Macdonald’s book—a memoir that follows the author learning the art of hawk-taming and dealing with the death of her father—as ‘a unique and beautiful book with a searing emotional honesty, and descriptive language that is unparalleled in modern literature’. The Costa Book of the Year award is presented annually to an ‘outstanding’ book by an author based in the UK or Ireland. H is for Hawk previously won the 2014 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction.
