Marketing manager, Sydney

Walker Books Australia is an award-winning publishing house. For nearly thirty years, we have published outstanding children’s books for readers of all ages.

We have an exciting opportunity for a hands-on, creative and proactive marketing manager to play a leadership role in our dynamic and growing marketing and publicity team.

This busy, multi-faceted role creates and manages end-to-end campaigns to promote individual books, key brands and the Walker list and company in general; across all our audiences including the book trade, consumers, educators and others, and all platforms including print, digital and others.

Among other tasks, the marketing manager also:

  • Chairs and runs planning meetings
  • Manages sponsorships (for example, Awards and CBCA functions)
  • Is responsible for relationships with key marketing partners (such as Better Reading, Tandem, Next Media and Magpies)
  • Plays a key role in our trade/retail promotions (gifts with purchase, competitions, attendance and participation at retailer conferences, etc)
  • Has oversight of the day to day running of running of company websites, EDMs and social media platforms.

The role reports to the marketing and PR director and up to the company president, and manages two marketing coordinators and a marketing designer.

Perhaps you’ve been a campaign manager or the number two in a marketing team for a while, and are keen to take the next step and broaden your experience. If so, this role could be for you!

You will:

  • Be a hands-on all-rounder with demonstrated ability to create and brief all aspects of a campaign
  • Have a minimum of 4 years of book trade experience (children’s book experience would be ideal)
  • Have a demonstrated strong knowledge of book marketing techniques; with solid industry connections and a history of successful management of business relationships and creator relationships
  • Be proactive in seeking new marketing initiatives
  • Have an understanding and enthusiasm for the various technology platforms available to marketing teams (Hootsuite, Mailchimp, et al) and the ability to research and recommend options
  • Be able to plan, prioritise and manage a varied workload in a pressured environment
  • Have excellent written communication skills, with the ability to write highly effective marketing copy targeted at our specific audiences
  • Demonstrate great interpersonal skills (HR and people management experience will be looked on favourably).
