US bookshop sales up 7% in first half of 2023

In the US, bookshop sales grew 7% in the first six months of the year compared to the same period in 2022, reports Publishers Weekly.
According to preliminary estimates from the US Census Bureau, sales in the period totalled US$3.9 billion (A$6b). Bookshop sales outpaced growth in the entire retail segment, which was up 3.2% over the same period. Compared to 2019, bookshop sales in the first half of the year were down 5.9%.
Bookshop sales are ahead of most other US industry metrics, including print book sales by volume, which were flat over the same period, according to Circana BookScan.
