ILF Day theme announced

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) has announced ‘Strength In Our Stories: For Now & Future Generations’ as the 2025 Indigenous Literacy Day (ILD) theme and Grinj det K’Taun Krok! (Grinch the K-Town Croc!), written and illustrated by students from Katherine High School in the NT, as the ILD 2025 book.

Running on 3 September, ILD ‘is a celebration of First Nations stories, cultures and languages’.

Events include the streaming of an ILF film, travelling through three Aboriginal Communities ‘to learn about the diverse ways storytelling makes their Communities strong’.

The communities featured in the film are Ceduna and Koonibba in South Australia ‘to learn from young author Mia Speed, celebrate Wirangu language, and make Bush Medicine on Country’; Katherine and Binjari in the Northern Territory ‘to meet student authors of Grinj det K’Taun Krok!, hear from Elders, and learn the creational Dreaming story of Katherine Gorge’; and Warakurna Community in Western Australia ‘to go out on Country, learn about the seasons, and how Miss Daisy’s knowledge and stories are keeping Warakurna kids strong’.

ILF CEO Ben Bowen said, ‘These Communities are honouring the stories of their Ancestors that have been passed down for thousands and thousands of years, and creating new stories that celebrate their cultures and languages.’

Following the film, a performance at the Sydney Opera House featuring Jessica Mauboy, Lucas Proudfoot, Bianca Hunt, Justine Clarke, Josh Pyke, and Dobby will be live-streamed.

More information is available on the ILF website.
