Flame Tree acquires 3 novels by Eugen Bacon

UK publisher Flame Tree has acquired world rights to 3 “Afro-surreal” books by Eugen Bacon.

The titles acquired are murder mystery novella Jintu, to be published in September 2027; Betwixt, a collection of Afro-irreal short stories, for publication in May 2028; and Children of the Storm: Sauútiverse Stories, featuring “genre-bending stories set in the Afrocentric Sauútiverse”, for publication in September 2028.

An African Australian author, Bacon has been awarded the Kate Wilhelm Solstice Award for significant contributions to science fiction and fantasy writing. She is a Solstice, British Fantasy, Ignyte, Locus and Foreword Indies Award winner and has been a finalist for awards including the World Fantasy, Shirley Jackson, Aurealis, Philip K Dick, Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards and Nommo Awards for speculative fiction by Africans. In 2024, Bacon was named the University of Tasmania Hedberg Writer-in-Residence.

“Some writing demands a larger global stage and we see this in Eugen’s work,” said Flame Tree publisher Nick Wells. “She brings richness and newness to the literary landscape, encapsulating her hybridity as an African who is also Australian.”

Flame Tree plans to publish the 3 titles in 2027 and 2028.
