‘Andy Roid’ series (Felice Arena, Puffin): Andy Roid and the Superhero Secret and Andy Roid and the Field Trip Terror
Andy Reid always thought his parents were bakers. He was wrong, as he discovers after a horrifying accident. His parents are actually scientists working on secret military technologies for the government, and they have rebuilt his body. His arms and legs are now robotic, giving him amazing strength and speed, and he has had many other ‘upgrades’ as well, which he discovers over time. Now Andy Reid has the code name Andy Roid, a big secret to keep, and whole new series of problems to cope with. Not only does he have to deal with school, complete with bullies, cute girls and annoying teachers, but he is being tracked by the Seriously Sinister Society, desperate to steal his secrets. Felice Arena introduces us to a new hero, and a new series, with these titles. Andy’s excitement at his newfound powers is palpable and relatable. Arena keeps the stories moving at a rapid clip, maintaining interest and engagement even for more reluctant readers. A strong sense of humour shines through with elements like bionic lab rats! Clocking in at just under 90 pages, these books are a great read for middle primary school readers looking for a fast-paced action adventure.
