Leopard Dreaming (A A Bell, Voyager)
This is the final book in A A Bell’s ‘Mira Chambers’ trilogy, following Diamond Eyes and Hindsight. It’s written in the style of an urban fantasy, but with ideas that have much in common with science-fiction. It also has enough pace and action to be considered a thriller, as well as a credible romance subplot that is significant without being cloying or twee. Mira, the series’ protagonist, is blind, but only to the present. Her crystalline eyes allow her to see into the past. Another character, Freddie, has a similar ability. Deaf to the present, he can ‘hear’ the future. The thriller aspect is introduced as various unscrupulous factions try to control Mira and Freddie. The most intriguing thing about this series is its premise, which challenges fixed ideas about past, present and future. Leopard Dreaming takes up the story from the cliffhanger ending of Hindsight, so readers will have to be familiar with the earlier books. Also, as it is the final book, the major plot elements are resolved with a few cool twists for good measure. I would advise booksellers to shelve a few copies with the urban fantasies, a few with the thrillers and a few with science-fiction, because there is something in here for all of these genres’ fans. The release of the final book offers booksellers the opportunity to promote earlier titles, and these books are worth promoting.
