Robinsons Bookshop to open store at Chadstone

Independent Melbourne bookstore Robinsons Bookshop will open a third store next month.

Owner Suzanne Horman told Bookseller+Publisher that the new store will open in Chadstone Shopping Centre in early October. Horman bought the original Robinsons business in Frankston in 2007 and opened a second store in Greensborough Plaza in Melbourne’s north in March.

Horman said the new store will be located in one of the recently built wings of the Chadstone shopping complex, which has been without a new bookstore since the closure of two REDgroup Retail outlets last year. Robinsons Chadstone will be a general bookstore with a focus on a strong backlist range, said Horman, who added that the focus of the store may change depending on the preferences of the local community.

Horman said she decided to open a third store at Chadstone for a number of reasons, including the location of the shopping centre, which is between the chain’s two existing stores in Frankston and Greensborough, and the opportunity offered by the centre’s landlords, who also look after the Greensborough store. Horman said Robinsons’ experience in Greensborough has also acted as a ‘blueprint’ for extending the business to a new location. ‘The opening of the Greensborough store was a trial for taking an independent bookstore into a shopping centre and I think we have been successful,’ she said.

Robinsons is currently recruiting for a number of positions in the new Chadstone store. See Jobs for more information.
