Tumarkin wins 2013 Sidney Myer Creative Fellowship

Melbourne-based writer Maria Tumarkin has been awarded one of the 2013 Sidney Myer Creative Fellowships, worth $160,000 over two years.

As one of the seven Sidney Myer Creative Fellows, Tumarkin will receive a grant of $80,000 each year for two years. The grants are ‘unrestricted’ and are not tied to specific projects. The fellowships, which were first awarded in 2012, are presented to individuals in the humanities for ‘outstanding talent and exceptional courage’.

Tumarkin is the author of three books, Traumascapes (MUP), Courage (MUP) and Otherland: A Journey with My Daughter (Vintage), as well as articles and essays that have been published in newspapers and literary journals. According to the Sidney Myer Fund, Tumarkin’s next book will be published by Scribe and is about ‘how we are formed by the past—ours, our parents’, [and] our culture’s’.

The fund described Tumarkin as ‘an outstanding writer fearlessly exploring the voiceless subject through a sophisticated public discourse’. ‘The depth of Maria’s moral, philosophical, psychological and political understanding is inspirational,’ said the fund.

The other recipients of this year’s fellowships include visual artists, actors, producers and musicians. For more information about the fellowships, click here.
