Good News, Bad News (Maggie Groff, Pan Macmillan)
Set in idyllic Byron Bay, Good News, Bad News follows freelance investigative journo Scout Davis, first introduced in Mad Men, Bad Girls and the Guerilla Knitters Institute, as she uncovers the secrets of the mysterious Anemone Sisters. Hermione Longfellow requests Scout’s talents to investigate the death of her brother-in-law, previously brushed aside as a boating accident during a freak storm. With her cat Chairman Meow as a sounding board, Scout must piece together over 20 years’ worth of lies and deception, faked deaths and marriages, in order to find the truth. Scout and her bestie Daisy follow clues from Byron Bay to Yab Noryb, Sydney, to the Whitsundays, with descriptions often reading like a travel brochure. Also thrown in the mix are some daydreams about Scout’s lover Rafe, memories of her currently abroad boyfriend Toby, a bit too much information about her diabetes, and some sneaky guerrilla-knitting projects. Good News, Bad News is an enjoyable, if predictable, holiday read. Think Aussie romcom with a dash of intrigue!
