Ted (Leila Rudge, Walker Books)
Illustrator Leila Rudge is making a name for herself in Australian picture books, and has collaborated on several books with author Meg McKinlay, including the Children’s Book Council of Australia-nominated No Bears. Rudge’s first solo effort begins slowly, introducing readers to Ted, who lives in a pet shop and has been there for some time. Ted is a smart dog: he sports an elegant jumper and tries his best to make a good impression so that someone nice will take him home. But there are so many other dogs that nobody ever notices Ted. In desperation, he runs away and joins a circus, but nobody notices his balancing act either. Eventually Ted decides to return to the pet shop, but on his way he reads a sign that changes his life forever. Ted is an engaging character who will appeal to young readers. This is a charming story with a fabulous surprise ending, which had the two young readers in our house laughing out loud. The illustrations are a mixture of pencil, ink and collage, with soft colours and crisp white backgrounds. This is highly recommended.
