Australian, NZ publishers nominated for inaugural Bologna Prize for children’s publishing

Allen & Unwin, Koala Books, The Five Mile Press and Gecko Press have been nominated in the Oceania category of the inaugural Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publisher of the Year.

The BOP Bologna Prize has been established by the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and the Italian Publishers Association to mark the 50th anniversary of the book fair and to ‘pay tribute to excellence in the world of children’s publishing’. Publishers involved in this year’s book fair are asked to vote for six prizes, which will be presented for the geographical regions of Asia, Africa, Central-South America, Europe, North America and Oceania.

A full list of publishers nominated in each of the regions is available online here.

The Bologna Book Fair said in a statement that the finalists for each region have been nominated by international publishers associations and cultural institutions that represent book publishers. Publishers participating in this year’s fair have until 18 March to vote for their favourite nominated publisher online.

The winners of the prize will be announced at this year’s book fair on 26 March. The winning publishers will be invited to write ‘a brief piece about the work of a children’s publisher’, which will be distributed at the prize ceremony.

This year’s Bologna Children’s Book Fair will be held between 25 and 28 March. For more information, visit the website here.
