Where Are You, Banana? (Sofie Laguna, illus by Craig Smith, A&U)

This book explores the special relationship that develops between a child and their first pet. Roddy and Banana have been best friends ever since Roddy’s dad brought Banana home as a puppy when Roddy was a toddler. The two friends play together, sleep together and go everywhere together. However, when Roddy’s family are invited to Aunt Celia’s for the day, the invitation is not extended to their dog. Banana has a history of misbehaving when he is left alone, and on this occasion, the family returns home to find that Banana has disappeared. Where Are You, Banana? has all the ingredients of a delightful children’s book. Sofie Laguna has chosen the first-person narrative to tell the story in Roddy’s voice, allowing readers to experience the adventure through a child’s eyes. The text and illustrations work beautifully together, creating a strong relationship between Banana and Roddy and building suspense when the dog disappears. Pre-schoolers will warm to this story, where Roddy is the ultimate hero who rallies his family and neighbour to rescue his closest friend.
