Scribe to publish first children’s book in November

Melbourne-based publisher Scribe will publish its first children’s picture book in November.

Amazing Babes by Sydney writer Eliza Sarlos and Tokyo-based illustrator Grace Lee is described as ‘an inspirational picture book for kids and adults featuring strong, powerful, and world-changing women from around the globe and across generations’. Among the women featured in the book are Australians Miles Franklin, Edith Cowan and Mum Shirl; Americans Gloria Steinem and Audre Lorde; and Burmese political activist Aung San Suu Kyi.

Scribe art director Miriam Rosenbloom told Books+Publishing that ‘although Scribe hasn’t published a picture book before, we felt that Amazing Babes was perfect for us’.

‘I heard about Amazing Babes through a high school teacher friend of mine who was very excited about Eliza and Grace’s project,’ said Rosenbloom. ‘The idea of bringing feminism and female role models to a new generation of readers sits very well with Scribe’s desire to promote social justice and political thinking from within trade publishing.’

Rosenbloom said that while Scribe does not have ‘a specific plan to develop a children’s list with a set amount of titles per year’, the publisher is ‘always open to projects which we love and feel passionate about that we think we can publish well’. She added that Scribe hopes the book will be sold in both children’s and general bookshops. ‘We think it has a very broad potential audience and will appeal to parents and children alike,’ said Rosenbloom.
