Creatures of Magic (Maree Fenton-Smith, Walker Books)
When Anna’s new neighbours move in, all she hopes for is a family with a girl her own age to play with. She certainly doesn’t imagine that the Brown family will introduce her to a whole new world filled with books of magic, strange creatures and dangerous enemies. Violet Brown might just be the oddest friend she’s ever had, and Anna has to decide exactly how far she is willing to go to protect her neighbours—and if she can trust them at all. Creatures of Magic is full of quirky, captivating characters, and introduces a world of magic that is unique and brimming with potential. The relationship between Anna and Violet is well developed, and it is great to see a character who is slow to trust in something that doesn’t make sense, demanding proof along the way and taking her time to decide where her loyalties lie. This is a charming story for younger readers about the strength of friendship and family, perfectly complemented by kooky and sweet illustrations from Lilly Piri. Creatures of Magic is sure to be loved by fans of ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ and Emily Rodda.
