National Book Foundation announces this year’s ‘5 Under 35’

In the US, the National Book Foundation has announced the writers selected for this year’s ‘5 Under 35’ program, and for the first time in the program’s eight-year history, the five young writers are all women. The five writers and the previous National Book Award winners and finalists who selected them are: Molly Antopol, author of The UnAmericans (to be published in the US by W W Norton in February 2014), selected by Jesmyn Ward; NoViolet Bulawayo, author of We Need New Names (Chatto & Windus), selected by Junot Díaz; Amanda Coplin, author of The Orchardist (Orion), selected by Louise Erdich; Daisy Hildyward, author of Hunters in the Snow (Jonathan Cape), selected by Kevin Powers; and Merritt Tierce, author of Love Me Back (to be published in the US by Doubleday in 2014), selected by Ben Fountain. Each of the five writers will receive a cash prize of US$1000 (A$1079) and will be honoured at a party during National Book Awards Week in November.
