Children’s Peace Literature Award 2013 winners announced

The winners of the 2013 Children’s Peace Literature Award have been announced.

The biennial award, which is presented by the Australian Psychological Society’s interest group Psychologists for Peace to books that ‘encourage the peaceful resolution of conflict or promote peace at the global, local or interpersonal level’, was judged in two categories in 2013: books for junior readers (up to mid-primary) and books for older readers.

Aaron Blabey won the junior readers category for The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon (Viking), which the award judges described as ‘a lively story, told in rollicking verse, and enhanced by eye-catching illustrations’.

The award for older readers was presented to My Life as an Alphabet by Barry Jonsberg (A&U). The judges described the book’s main character Candice as ‘a wonderfully funny, inspiringly practical role model’ who has a ‘desire to pursue happiness for all her relatives, friends and merest acquaintances’.
