Ariel Books closes The Rocks store

Sydney independent bookseller Ariel Books has closed its store in The Rocks after 15 years of trading.

Manger Julia Blanks told Books+Publishing that the main reasons for the closure were ‘the high rent coupled with a slowdown in tourism over the last few years due to the Global Financial Crisis and high Australian dollar, plus the challenges facing the book industry at the moment’.

‘The decision to close was a hard one as we loved The Rocks area, the travellers from all over the world and the beauty of the store itself,’ said Blanks.

Ariel Books also operates a store in Paddington. Blanks said the team will now ‘throw all our energies at our store on Oxford Street’, with plans for more events and community initiatives.
