Holland-Batt appointed poetry editor at ‘Island’

Sarah Holland-Batt has been appointed poetry editor at Island.

Holland-Batt is a lecturer in creative writing and literary studies at Queensland University of Technology and the author of the award-winning poetry collection Aria (UQP). Her poems have been published in Australian and international literary journals and anthologies and have been translated into numerous languages.

In an interview on the Wheeler Centre blog, Holland-Batt said she was ‘incredibly energised’ by her work as Island’s new poetry editor. ‘There’s a clandestine thrill in reading important new poems before they’ve been aired to the world. There’s also the imminent possibility that the next Harwood or Slessor is lurking somewhere in the slush pile, so my editorial work is always infused with a sense of discovery and novelty.’

Holland-Batt’s first issue as poetry editor, Island 137, is published next week and contains new poetry from Emily Bitto, Kate Middleton, Luke Beesley, Tomaž Šalamun and Paula Bohince. For more information, visit the website here.

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Geordie Williamson was appointed fiction editor at Island in March.
