Brisbane publisher invites submissions to ‘world building’ project

The Lane of Unusual Traders is a new online literary project launched by Brisbane-based small publisher Tiny Owl Workshop. It invites writers to bring the imaginary world of Midlfell into life using prompts from short story writer and book reviewer Chris White.

Australian illustrator Terry Whidborne has produced a map of ‘the City of Lind’, which contains 20 Story Lots numbered from 1 – 23. Ten lots are dedicated to flash fiction of no more than 500 words and 10 lots are designed for short stories up to 3000 words.

Writers are invited to make submissions in any style or genre that will appeal to adults or young adults. The deadline for flash fiction submissions is 31 July and payment for flash fiction stories accepted for publication is $60. The deadline for short story submissions is 31 August and payment for short stories accepted for publication is $300.

‘The aim is to publish a Lane of Unusual Traders Annual (physical book format),’ said the publisher on the Tiny Owl Workshop blog. ‘But as we like to do things a little differently you may find your stories published on postcards, scrolls (of the parchment not bread variety), paper napkins or in some other form that presents itself and which fits the project. Tiny Owl Workshop will, however, negotiate this with authors prior to publishing.’
