Wroclaw, Poland announced as World Book Capital City 2016

Wroclaw in Poland has been announced as World Book Capital City 2016 by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Candidate cities, which also included Brasília in Brazil, Montilla in Spain and Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, were required to draw up a program of events for the year aimed at promoting books and fostering reading. The selection committee decided on Wroclaw’s program because of the ‘quality and variety, and in particular for its special focus on grass-root community involvement, as well as promotion of publishing, bookselling industries and libraries at regional and international levels’. The committee comprised of members of International Publishers Association, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and the International Booksellers Federation. Port Harcourt in Nigeria is World Book Capital City for 2014 and the city of Incheon in South Korea will receive the status in 2015. As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Bangkok in Thailand celebrated the status of World Book Capital City in 2013.
