Gorton wins Philip Hodgins Memorial Medal

Lisa Gorton has been awarded this year’s Philip Hodgins Memorial Medal at the Mildura Writers’ Festival in Victoria.

The award, which is named after the Australian poet and co-founder of the Mildura Writers’ Festival, is presented annually to an Australian writer ‘whose work best reflects the high standards and distinguished literary accomplishments that Philip Hodgins consistently advocated and exemplified in his poetry’.

Gorton has written two books of poetry, a children’s book, and published work in Australian, British and American journals. She will release her upcoming novel The Life of Houses later this year.

This year’s judge Chris Wallace-Crabbe presented Gorton with a unique medal, hand crafted by Mildura artist Jim Curry, along with a $3000 cash prize. Each year Curry makes a new medal for the event, based on materials specific to the region.

The 2014 Mildura Writers’ Festival was held from 17 to 20 July. To see the award winners in previous years, visit the Auslit website here. For more information about the festival, visit the Arts Mildura website here.
