Samsung closes Australian book content business

Samsung has closed its Australian book content business as part of a company-wide move.

‘Globally, Samsung Electronics closed Samsung Books in Samsung Hub,’ a company spokesperson told Books+Publishing.

As a result of the closure in June, Samsung Australia ereading content manager Richard Bilkey lost his job. Bilkey’s role involved signing publishers to provide local content.

In place of its Hub Books offering, Samsung has partnered with Amazon to launch the Kindle for Samsung app, a ‘custom-built ebook service developed for Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets’, according to the company spokesperson. Users of the app receive Samsung Book Deals, which offer a free ebook each month.

The company has also announced the closure of its Video and Media Hub division.
